The negotiations on the MFF: Poland and Germany on a collision course?

Blog

We are back with our German-Polish European Blog! The aim of the blog, launched with our partner WiseEuropa, is to present the most current international topics from German and Polish perspective. We invite experts from both countries to examine issues related to the EU foreign policy, German-Polish bilateral relations and other relevant matters. While both countries may not always have the same vision, we believe it is important to understand the motivations and arguments of the other – and that is what we are trying to achieve on our monthly blog articles.

This month, we take a close look at the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) of the European Union, a crucial budgetary document for years 2021-2027. It is expected that the negotiations will be long and dominated by numerous challenges that the EU will have to face in the years to come – Brexit, antidemocratic movements in some member states, discussions about migration, to name just a few. Our Polish expert, Jan Truszczyński, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs explains what are the issues at stake in Poland, in the context of tensions between the state’s authorities and the European institutions. On the other side, Almut Möller from the European Council on Foreign Relations’ (ECFR) Berlin office presents the perspective of Germany, the biggest contributor to the EU budget.
