The world in our cities; our cities in the world

Report

The theme of this year’s World in Focus: Warsaw International Gathering was the future, both of that big, remote world and the changes that await us in our immediate urban environment.

Over the two days, ten debates were held with 40 experts from 13 countries. With the help of partner organisations a diverse group of professionals was assembled representing areas such as international relations, economics, new technologies, urbanisation and migration. And all this to give the sizeable public audience an up-close look at the current trends and challenges facing politics both great and small.

Enjoying particular popularity was the debate with the city leaders Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, President of Warsaw, Robert Biedroń, President of Słupsk and Katharina Fegebank, Vice-President of Hamburg. The discussion wove local, Warsaw and Polish themes into more global ones, such as the impact of climate change on the future of cities.

World in Focus also looked at global energy and climate policy. On the first evening we screened the first Polish feature-length documentary about Poland’s green-energy development potential, The Tipping Point. Energy aNew, directed by Łukasz Błuszcz and produced by the WWF. It clearly shows our civilisation’s challenges in the face of ongoing climate change.

World in Focus ended traditionally, with a discussion about Poland and its place in Europe, with the participation of minister Marek Magierowski, ambassador Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz and economist Dr Marcin Kędzierski.

Let’s not forget the younger generation, whom we also want to include in our events. For children we prepared "My Warsaw" workshops, with an invitation to fun and games centred around the capital’s favourite spots.

Thank you! to all attendees for taking part.

And we invite you all back next year, on 12 and 13 October 2018, to the Creativity Centre and the Museum of Warsaw’s Prague District!
