Greening Europe "The Greens remain an important player in European politics". This is how Rebecca Harms, co-president of the Greens/EFA, interpreted the results of the latest EP election. This outcome was not self-evident before the elections, as the European voters got more and more polarized in times of crisis, and many of them asked for simple answers, which might be the main reason for the success of populist parties around Europe. But, as the results show, support for Green politics consolidated and, what is even more encouraging, not only in the Green “homelands” as Luxembourg or Sweden, but also in countries like Hungary or Croatia, where Green candidates have been elected into the European Parliament for the first time. Hungarian Elections: New Green Party Achieves Unexpected Success, But so Does The Radical Right Barely three months after its official formation Hungary’s new green party, LMP (Lehet Más a Politika / Politics Can Be Different) has managed to entrench itself on the country’s political map. Standing in coalition with the small Humanist Party, LMP obtained 2.6 % of the votes, coming in fifth place, well before the liberals, who have reached an historic low and may well disappear from the political landscape. This green success was overshadowed, however, by the unexpectedly strong showing of the radical right.

The turning point that let to the establishment and the development of the West European Green Parties was the 1968 student revolt and the wave of new social movements that resulted from it. In the former Soviet bloc, however, the protest movements lacked this dimension - only after 1989 was it possible to create the first ever Green parties that have become politically more visible and active in recent years.
