The upcoming parliamentary elections are likely to bring several changes to the Polish political scene that could visibly influence the Polish European policy. The big question is whether more eurosceptical movements in Poland will have a say, and if so, how they will act among similar parties in the European Union? What are the main Polish priorities? And how will Poland behave towards the refugee crisis? Institute of Public Affairs and Heinrich Böll Foundation in Warsaw are pleased to invite you to a post-election briefing "Small corrections or a heavy earthquake? Polish European policy after the elections".
The possible change will also influence relations with the most important Polish partner in the EU – Germany. The question is whether a new government will opt to confront the biggest partner in the EU or instead make small corrections in its policy. How will the election results influence bilateral relations and Polish-German cooperation in Brussels? Will there be a change in rhetoric or a change in substance? And how will Poland define its own position in the region? Is a community stretching from the Baltic to the Adriatic and Black Sea a future reality or just wishful thinking?
The Polish election campaign has been mainly based on economic arguments, such as how opponents running for election will improve the economic situation in Poland. However, realising all these promises could force Poland to break the EU’s rules, leading to an increase in Polish debt. How will the new government deal with the required reforms and available sources?
Not everything will be clear just one day after the elections, but we will hopefully be able to speculate on Poland’s activities in the EU in the upcoming months.
