Uniting a large part of the continent under the European Neighbourhood Policy created the inevitable though largely unintended consequence of differences. Recently, the EU launched a consultation on the future of its relations with neighbouring countries. The Heinrich Böll Foundation participated at the review process and submitted its evaluation to the European Commission.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation is a German Green political foundation that works in over 60 countries in the spheres of sustainability, cross-cultural dialogue, and education. Common European values, gender democracy and energy transition are both central tenets and cross-cutting themes for the Warsaw Office.

Populism is a complex challenge to our democratic political systems, even more so in times of crisis. We are currently witnessing not only an economic crisis, but also a crisis of democracy, manifesting itself in a lack of mutual trust and of political and civil participation.
